Parish Council Tax

About and contact

Updated 24 October 2026

Parish Council Tax answers the question people ask when the council tax bill lands, or before they move: what will a home in this parish pay, and why is it different from the village next door? Each parish page gives every band, who receives the money, how the bill compares with the parishes that share its border, and how the parish's own part has moved over five years. Each council page ranks every parish in it.

Why it exists

Councils publish the figures, but usually as one long PDF for the whole district, once a year. The national statistics give each parish's precept on its own, not the whole bill. This site puts the two together for each parish, in plain English, so the answer is one search away.

How the figures are made

Every figure comes from the government's own statistics. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government publishes what each council, county, police and fire authority charges at Band D, and, separately, each parish's precept. A parish's bill is the sum of those parts, each band worked out and rounded as councils do it. For Chichester district the result matches the council's own published charges for every band in all 67 parishes, to the penny, in both 2025-26 and 2026-27. The sources and method page explains every step and its limits.

Rolling out council by council, starting with Chichester district. Live so far: every parish in Chichester district on its council page, and 7 parish pages of their own, with more added each day. Councils where some areas pay extra "special expenses" are added only once their own schedules have been checked, because the national figures alone are not exact there.

When the figures change

Once a year. Councils set the new year's council tax in February and early March, and the government publishes the national figures in March and May. Between releases the sources are still checked every month, and each page shows when: "Sources checked" with the date, and whether anything on the page has changed since. A page's "updated" date only moves when one of its figures does. The update log lists every check, including the months when nothing changed.

Corrections

If a figure looks wrong, email hello@parishcounciltax.co.uk with the page and what you think is wrong. Every report is checked against the source within a week. If a figure is wrong it is corrected, the page's date changes to show it, and the correction is noted in the update log.

Who runs it

The site is run independently by George. It is not connected to any council or government department, takes no fees, and carries no advertising. It cannot see or change anyone's bill: questions about a bill, a band, a discount or a payment go to the council that sends it.
